Read the novel more as a series of novellas focus on the characters, who really do drive the story along, and it might work better for you. He'd published some short stories, and a few novels, but this was his first really big "hit". One thing to realize is that this was written over 30 years ago, when Cook was really just beginning to really figure out that "writing stuff".
