Madeline is being tried for the murders and if Claire's body wasn't recovered, Amber would know.

There's no way Claire survived, if she had, the police would have notified Amber. When we find the bracelet on the room service platter, I don't know what kind of "twist" this could be. I do believe she killed Claire.Ĭlaire and Amber are in fact two peas in a pod, in their psychosis. We find that Amber isn't innocent at all and harbored a deep and pathalogical hatred of Claire and ends up killing her in the end. Amber had me believing she was an innocent victim, controlled by Claire. While there are many twists in this book, the confusion doesn't come from the twists, it comes from the realization towards the end of the book that Claire was writing the diary entries. (view spoiler) [I think the "big twist" in the end is the diary entry where Claire writes "Amber made me do it". They're just a mirror image of one another in broken glass."

So she leaves the bracelet that she is still there, but distanced. She's shown what she is capable of and now Claire is having to get creative. So why not claim her children? Because Amber is in control now. It's possible that only David died and it was assumed Claire did as well, though maybe she was able to leave enough of herself behind (DNA, clothing) to suggest she did in fact die. We never hear about the bodies, though Madeleine being charged for murder suggests at least one body was found. Last we hear of her is Amber noting that she is still breathing and her eyes are open. We don't really know what happened to Claire. One - it's Edward, somehow having acquired the bracelet and knowing good and well how it would frazzle Amber. It snowballed from there.Īs for the ending.I think there are two possibilities. If anyone ever found those journals, all fingers would point to Amber from just that one line, despite all other entries suggesting that Claire was fully responsible. I believe the "Taylor told me to do it" was the beginning of Claire's blackmail. She did bad things, most of which were put in motion by Claire, but was mostly at the mercy of her frail mind due to what Claire did as a child, and eventually her coma and what Edward did to her. I also believe Amber was truly a victim overall. I do believe that Claire was off her rocker and genuinely would blackmail Amber out of "love" in order to keep her in her life. I think the whole point of the ending, and the story, is that we never truly understand who Amber is as a person.
